Hugo Lavallade

Hugo is a longtime PAWS supporter and volunteer with experience in everything from dog socialization to transport/intake of new animals. Recently, Hugo’s become an incredible animal and community advocate through our PAWS for Life Outreach Program.

If you’re interested in joining Hugo to bring pet resources and services to the communities which need them most, learn more about our PAWS for Life program here. As Hugo attests, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience!

How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago? What originally drew you to the organization?

My wife and I adopted a sweet puppy, Kahlua, from PAWS in 2012 and I was moved to help other animals too. I volunteered as much as I could back then, and recently I’ve been volunteering consistently since July 2018. I love PAWS and I’m fully committed to the No Kill mission.

Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?

When I started volunteering last year at the Medical Center, I wanted to learn every aspect of the organization. I started walking and socializing dogs and I’m now a Level 2 volunteer. I was also helping at the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic. I’ve done transport and intake. Later on, I learned about the PAWS for Life Program and signed up for orientation to do transport as well as canvassing Gus Mobile and Pet Food Pantry.

I wasn’t aware of any of these programs and I believe all the work PAWS does is extremely important, not only because it saves lives, but also for their involvement with the community. I’m proud to be part of this organization.

Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?

Intake completely changed me. I’ve gotten to see animals at their most vulnerable and with the help of our amazing volunteers, we welcome them into the program it truly is a gratifying experience to make them feel loved and safe either again or for the first time.

I recently adopted a puppy from PAWS. Two weeks ago, after coming back from the North Shore Adoption Center, I saw 3 black Labrador puppies in the bank lobby - 2 girls and a boy named Hugo. I just couldn’t believe it! I haven’t mentioned it, but we already have 2 dogs and 3 cats, and now I have Ollie (formerly known as Hugo)! I guess it was meant to be.

What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

Thanks to PAWS I’ve met amazing people. I was fortunate to participate in a Community Day in Back of the Yards and being able to see firsthand the love people have for their furry family members is a great experience.

I’m aware of all the progress since PAWS was created and I know there’s more that needs to be done to make Chicago a No Kill city and it makes me happy to be part of it.

Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

I have learned a lot since I started volunteering at PAWS. If someone is considering becoming a volunteer, I’d recommend trying to experience everything we do at PAWS at least once. It’s going to help you find that thing you’re most passionate about and be there anytime you can. Even a few hours a week can go a long way.
